  1. Note: The table shows the effect of case volume on mortality for different specifications of case volume. All regressions are estimated with the following covariates: age, male, charlson comorbidity index (1–2, 3–4, > = 5), admission reason (emergency, transfer), weekend/holiday admission, diagnosis specific main diagnoses, ownership (private not-for-profit, private for-profit), and university hospital. The tertiles divide the sample in three parts based on the case volume of hospitals. Hence, it is possible to distinguish patients treated in low, medium and high volume hospitals
